Azerbaijan to Double Hydropower Plant Capacity in Nakhchivan.


Nakhchivan: Azerbaijan is set to significantly increase its hydropower capabilities in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. The total generating capacity of hydroelectric power plants in the region is anticipated to reach 120 megawatts. This follows the construction of the Ordubad Hydropower Plant (HPP), with a capacity of 36 megawatts, and the Tivinsk HPP, which will add 15.6 megawatts, as announced by Metin Abbasli, head of the press service of the State Energy Service of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

According to Trend News Agency, the current generating capacity of hydroelectric power plants in Nakhchivan stands at 68.4 megawatts. The region hosts five hydroelectric, three solar, one wind, and one hybrid power plant. In September 2024 alone, alternative and renewable energy sources contributed to 35 percent of the total electricity produced. This marks an increase from the previous year, with a nearly 20 percent rise in electricity generated from alternative and renewable sources.

The share of green en
ergy in electricity generation was 35.1 percent in the first nine months of 2023, whereas it rose to 53 percent in the same period of 2024. Currently, green energy accounts for 55 percent of the total electricity supply in Nakhchivan.
