Azerbaijan’s BIG Report Criticizes Human Rights Abuses in French Overseas Territories

BAKU: A report by the Baku Initiative Group (BIG) has revealed significant human rights violations in France's overseas territories, highlighting issues related to freedom of speech, expression, and voting rights. The findings were presented at a press conference, emphasizing the challenges these regions face due to French colonial policies. According to Trend News Agency, the report was unveiled by Abbas Abbasov, the Executive Director of BIG, who underscored the adverse effects of French dominance in the education system, which threatens the preservation of indigenous languages. The report also criticized France's colonial practices for their detrimental impact on local cultures and environments. The conference highlighted environmental concerns, citing France's nuclear testing and pesticide use in these territories as contributing factors to pollution and public health issues. Representatives from Guadeloupe, Martinique, and Mayotte shared their perspectives on the socio-environmental challenges exacerba ted by French colonial policies. These representatives pointed to cultural imposition and economic practices as significant contributors to deforestation, water shortages, and deficiencies in education, healthcare, culture, and infrastructure. The report calls for urgent attention to these issues to improve conditions in the affected territories.
