Azerbaijan’s Urban Development: A Model for Post-Conflict Reconstruction

Baku: Azerbaijan is undertaking extensive reconstruction and development projects in Garabagh, focusing on building new cities, modern infrastructure, and sustainable 'smart' communities.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, these initiatives have caught the attention of international experts as a potential comprehensive post-conflict urban development model.

Further highlighting the significance of these projects is the upcoming United Nations World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku. This event, one of the world's largest dedicated to urbanism and sustainable urban development, will provide a platform for professional exchange and the presentation of innovative urban solutions. Azerbaijan is increasingly seen as a country where large-scale infrastructure transformation, modern architectural solutions, and historical heritage preservation coexist. Baku is already recognized by international experts as a city with a distinctive architectural and urban identity that could influence global professional discussions.

In an interview with AZERTAC, architect Thomas Vonier discussed Azerbaijan's role in post-conflict reconstruction and the significance of WUF13 for the country. He noted that Azerbaijan's experience in Garabagh could serve as a practical model for other countries that have experienced conflict and destruction. Vonier also emphasized the importance of sustainable and human-centered urban development, highlighting how Azerbaijan's projects could shape new regional standards in the South Caucasus.

Vonier further remarked on Azerbaijan's architectural excellence and urban design, noting that delegates at WUF13 would likely be impressed by Baku's public spaces and the harmonious integration of ancient buildings with contemporary architecture. He believes these efforts strengthen Azerbaijan's international image and provide valuable examples for professionals in the field.

Addressing sustainable urban planning, Vonier stressed the importance of creating walkable cities with accessible public transportation and green spaces. He argued that while architecture influences individual spaces, broader urban planning issues, such as land use and investment in public transportation, require more attention.

Overall, Azerbaijan's ambitious urban development projects are positioning the country as a leader in post-conflict recovery and sustainable urban planning, with potential lessons for the global community.
