Baku: The 13th Global Baku Forum recently hosted its inaugural panel session centered on the theme 'Global Security and Balance of Power: Respect for International Law - New Issues, New Challenges.' This session was part of the broader conference titled 'Bridging Divides in a World in Transition.'
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the session was moderated by Yves Leterme, former Belgian Prime Minister. During the event, Charles Michel, also a former Prime Minister of Belgium, highlighted that the European Union's foundational principles of peace, prosperity, and democratic values are facing significant threats.
Amre Moussa, the former Secretary-General of the Arab League, pointed out the evolving nature of global security in the 21st century. He emphasized the increasing complexities of global security issues, driven by the growing social, economic, and political divides between the Global North and South, and the multifaceted challenges facing the Global South.
Alfred Gusenbauer, former Chancellor of Austria, stressed the importance of moving away from hostility and focusing on solutions rooted in international law, established norms, and cooperation principles. Meanwhile, Sebastian Kurz, also a former Chancellor of Austria, advocated for a reevaluation of the current international order and the strategies used to combat terrorism and hybrid warfare.
Kjell Magne Bondevik, former Prime Minister of Norway, remarked on the current international chaos in contrast to the stable order established post-World War II. He noted the diminished strength of international systems, including the UN and human rights conventions.
The panel session proceeded with further discussions on these pressing global issues.
