Mexico City: As Formula 1 prepares for the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso stands on the brink of a historic milestone: his 400th Grand Prix start. This achievement cements Alonso’s status as the first driver in the sport’s history to reach such a number, surpassing the previous record held by Kimi Raikkonen.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Alonso’s journey through more than two decades of Formula 1 racing began with his debut at the 2001 Australian Grand Prix. Since then, he has competed in 36% of all world championship F1 weekends, a testament to his enduring presence in the sport. Over his career, Alonso has completed over 72,750 laps during F1 weekends and test sessions, including 21,578 race laps, and has made 735 pitstops.
Alonso’s record against his teammates stands at 292:107 in qualifying and 262:117 in races, despite 20 double retirements. Beyond F1, his sabbatical included victories at the Le Mans 24 Hours and a World Endurance Championship title, highlighting his versatil
ity as a driver.
Alonso attributes his longevity in the sport to his passion and discipline, stating that reaching 400 grands prix reflects his love for racing. He remains motivated by the hope that each new season could be his year for further success. This drive is evident as he looks forward to continuing with Aston Martin for at least two more seasons, aiming for 40 or 50 more starts.
Alonso also notes that mental challenges, such as traveling and external pressures, weigh more heavily than physical demands in sustaining a lengthy F1 career. His ability to assess a car’s potential early, as recounted by fellow driver Pedro de la Rosa, underscores his keen intuition and experience, which have been crucial in navigating the highs and lows of his career.
