EU-Armenia Relations Strengthened as Commissioner Kos Visits Yerevan

Yerevan: Commissioner Marta Kos and Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan have jointly reaffirmed their commitment to furthering the growing partnership between the European Union (EU) and Armenia. This commitment was strengthened during a meeting on 19 September in Yerevan, where both leaders engaged in extensive discussions to enhance bilateral relations.

According to European Union, this visit marks Commissioner Kos's first to Armenia, symbolizing an unprecedented dynamic moment in EU-Armenia relations. She expressed support for Armenia's steps to deepen this partnership and welcomed the recent breakthrough in the Armenia-Azerbaijan normalization process achieved in August 2025 in Washington D.C. Commissioner Kos highlighted that the initialling of the peace agreement is a significant step forward towards lasting peace between the two countries and across the region. The EU is prepared to continue its support for peace and regional connectivity, contributing to sustainable peace and prosperity.

Furthermore, Commissioner Kos acknowledged Armenia's efforts to normalize relations with Türkiye, emphasizing the EU and Armenia's shared commitment to democratic values and European best practices. Armenia has reiterated its dedication to meeting the benchmarks of the Visa Liberalisation Action Plan (VLAP), which aims to enhance mobility and strengthen people-to-people ties.

In addition, Commissioner Kos announced additional support for ensuring transparency in Armenia's electoral processes ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections in 2026. The EU remains committed to supporting Armenia's democratic institutions and reform initiatives.

The EU and Armenia will continue their collaboration under the Global Gateway strategy, working with International Financial Institutions to advance investments fostering inclusive growth and connectivity. Since 2021, EU investments in Armenia are expected to reach EUR 2.5 billion, with today's announcement promising to accelerate this investment pipeline.

The EU is dedicated to investing in trade, energy, and transport connectivity, aligning with Armenia's Crossroads of Peace initiative. Commissioner Kos presented developments on the EU Cross-Regional Connectivity Agenda, which aims to connect Europe with Central Asia through the South Caucasus and Türkiye, highlighting Armenia's role in regional connectivity.

Finally, Commissioner Kos and Deputy Prime Minister Grigoryan concluded their meeting by emphasizing the importance of reviewing the progress at the next EU-Armenia Partnership Council, scheduled for early December 2025 in Brussels.
