APA: Eric Trachtenberg, Executive Director of the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC), highlights Azerbaijan’s potential to significantly impact cotton production. In a recent interview, Trachtenberg discussed the benefits of ICAC membership and the importance of sustainable agricultural practices.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Trachtenberg emphasized ICAC’s commitment to addressing environmental issues during its participation in COP29. He noted cotton’s role in job creation and carbon capture, underlining the importance of these factors in the ongoing discussions on carbon emissions reduction. Trachtenberg described ICAC as a “small United Nations of cotton producers,” offering member countries access to extensive data, scientific collaboration, and resources to enhance local cotton economies.
Trachtenberg also discussed ICAC’s innovative approaches to sustainable agriculture, particularly in response to water scarcity challenges intensified by climate change. He detailed a successful p
rogram in Zambia and Southern Africa that utilized regenerative agricultural practices, including biochar, Bokashi, and Jeebamurit, to improve soil health, reduce water and fertilizer use, and increase crop yields sustainably.
The potential for collaboration with Azerbaijan was highlighted, with Trachtenberg revealing meetings with local producer GP Cotton and prospective discussions with the Azerbaijani Ministry of Agriculture. He expressed optimism about Azerbaijan joining ICAC, which would facilitate cooperation and technological advancements in the country’s cotton sector.
