ICRC Facilitates Family News Exchange for Armenian Detainees in Azerbaijan

Baku: In February, the representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) conducted another visit to all Armenian detainees as notified by Azerbaijani authorities, as confirmed by Ilaha Huseynova, head of the Public Relations Department of the ICRC’s Azerbaijan delegation, in response to an inquiry by APA. The detainees were met privately and given the opportunity to exchange family news.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, during such visits, the ICRC evaluates the treatment of detainees and the conditions of their detention, ensuring that they can restore or maintain contact with their families. The ICRC follows a strict protocol whereby observations and recommendations from these visits are communicated solely to the detaining authorities.

Recently, Azerbaijan’s law enforcement agencies arrested several former leaders of the so-called entity in Garabakh. Among those detained and brought to Baku are former “presidents” Arkadi Gukasyan, Bako Sahakyan, Araik Arutyunyan, former “minister of foreign affairs” David Babayan, “parliament speaker” David Ishkhanyan, generals Lyova Mnatsakanyan, David Manukyan, and former “state minister” Ruben Vardanyan.

These individuals are currently facing charges in criminal cases that are being heard in the Baku Military Court.
