Baku: An international conference titled 'June 1984, the Amritsar Events: India's Transnational Repression Against Ethnic Minorities in the Context of Genocide' is scheduled to take place at Baku State University on June 3. This event is organized by the Baku Initiative Group (BIG), as reported by APA, citing BIG.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, representatives from the Dalit community, who have historically faced repressive and discriminatory policies by the Indian government, are set to participate in events held in Azerbaijan for the first time. This marks a significant moment for the Dalit community in raising awareness about their plight on an international platform.
The conference will also see participation from prominent Sikh community representatives hailing from countries such as Canada, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Australia, and the United States. These individuals, alongside heads of think tanks and experts in human rights and ethnic minority issues, will delve into discussions about the 1984 Amritsar events, the current situation of ethnic and religious minorities in India, and the broader context of transnational repression against diaspora communities.
In March, the Baku Initiative Group, in collaboration with Sikh Federation International, prepared a report titled 'Beyond Borders: India's Transnational Repression Against the Sikh Diaspora.' This report provides insights into the Indian government's repressive actions against diaspora members living abroad and revisits the 1984 Amritsar events, further emphasizing the ongoing struggles faced by these communities.
