KazMunayGaz Resumes Oil Exports via Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan Pipeline

Aktau: Kazakhstan’s national company KazMunayGaz (KMG) has resumed oil exports through the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, KMG loaded 8.8 thousand tons of Kashagan oil from the port of Aktau on September 13 for shipment via the BTC pipeline, with the next loading scheduled for September 20. In the first eight months of 2025, the pipeline transported 0.9 million tons of Kazakh oil.

KMG and Azerbaijan’s State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) signed a transit agreement in 2022, and in 2024, they reached a deal on a phased increase in oil transit through Azerbaijan. In July 2025, BTC Co. identified a quality issue in some crude oil shipments related to organic chlorides. A full quality assessment confirmed that the crude met specifications, although some tanks at the Ceyhan terminal contained organic chlorides, which were promptly isolated and addressed.

Currently, the BTC pipeline primarily carries oil from Azerbaijan’s Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli field and Shah Deniz condensate. It also transports crude and condensate from other Caspian sources, including Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and additional volumes produced by SOCAR in Azerbaijan. The BTC Co. shareholders include BP with 30.1%, SOCAR holding 32.97%, MOL with 8.9%, TPAO at 6.53%, Eni and TotalEnergies each with 5%, ITOCHU at 3.4%, ONGC Videsh with 3.1%, and both ExxonMobil and INPEX holding 2.5% each.
