BAKU — The threat of landmines continues to loom over civilians in Azerbaijan, with more than 370 people falling victim since the onset of the Second Karabakh War, according to the nation’s human rights commissioner.
According to Trend News Agency, Sabina Aliyeva, the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsperson) of Azerbaijan, reported these figures in response to a recent incident where a civilian was injured due to an explosion of ammunition in the village of Zyargar, in the Fuzuli district, as per Trend. Aliyeva criticized the persistent danger posed by Armenian-laid mines which not only threatens lives but also impedes the return of displaced persons to their homes. She underscored the absence of accurate minefield maps as a significant barrier to safety and rehabilitation efforts.
Aliyeva also called out the international community for its silence on what she terms “mine terror,” arguing that it leads to ongoing human rights violations and continues to endanger innocent lives. This situation, she insists, requires urgent international attention to prevent further casualties and facilitate recovery in the affected regions.
