Ruben Vardanyan Delivers Final Court Statement as Judges Retire for Deliberation

Baku: The trial of Ruben Vardanyan, an Armenian citizen facing numerous charges under the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan, continued at the Baku Military Court. Vardanyan stands accused of crimes against peace and humanity, war crimes, terrorism, and financing of terrorism, among other serious offenses.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the court session was presided over by Judge Zeynal Agayev, with judges Anar Rzayev and Jamal Ramazanov, and alternate judge Gunel Samedova, in attendance. The court provided Vardanyan with a Russian interpreter and a state-funded lawyer for his defense. During this session, the defense side was given the opportunity to present its final arguments.

The proceedings included a statement from Rufat Mammadov, representing the Azerbaijani state as a victim, who supported the prosecution's evidence and requested the court to consider it. Legal heirs of the victims also spoke, demanding life imprisonment for Vardanyan.

Ruben Vardanyan addressed the court, expressing his wish to consult with his lawyer, Emil Babishov. After a recess, Vardanyan chose not to have his lawyer deliver a defense speech. Later, his lawyer stated their disagreement with the charges but waived the right to deliver a full defense speech.

Vusal Aliyev, senior assistant to the Prosecutor General, responded by affirming that the prosecution had no further opinion, as the defense did not contest the prosecution's arguments. Subsequently, Vardanyan delivered his final statement, choosing to speak in general terms and reciting Azerbaijani poetry.

The judges concluded the judicial examination and retired to deliberate on the verdict, which will be announced at a later date. Vardanyan faces charges under multiple articles, including those related to planning and waging a war of aggression, persecution, torture, terrorism, and illegal entrepreneurship.
