Switzerland Secure Top Spot in Group B with Win Over Canada

Vancouver: Canada's FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign will continue into the knockout stage, but it was Switzerland who celebrated in Vancouver after a hard-fought victory that secured first place in Group B for Murat Yakin's side.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, while both teams advanced to the knockout stage - Canada for the first time in its history - Switzerland's success, achieved through second-half goals from Juan Vargas and Johan Manzambi, means they will return to BC Place in Vancouver on July 2 to face the third-placed team from Groups E, F, G, I or J in the Round of 32.

Canada, relegated to second place in the group by the defeat, progressed as runners-up and will travel to Los Angeles to face the runners-up of Group A on June 28.

Switzerland created their first clear opportunity after 11 minutes. Released by Ricardo Rodriguez, Breel Embolo went through on goal but was denied by Canada goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau, before Derek Cornelius blocked Johan Manzambi's follow-up effort.

Despite Canada's determination, their closest attempts before the break came through low shots from Cyle Larin and Ali Ahmed, neither of which seriously troubled Gregor Kobel.

Just 40 seconds into the second half, Switzerland took control as Vargas collected the ball at the far post and fired into the bottom corner following Manzambi's low cross from the right. Manzambi doubled the lead in the 57th minute, scoring his third goal of the tournament with a low shot beneath Crepeau.

Canada responded with the spirit that has carried them into the knockout stage. Substitute Promise David scored with his first touch, volleying home in the 74th minute, just two minutes after entering the match. The goal sparked sustained pressure on the Swiss defense, but Kobel's late save from David's header ensured Switzerland secured all three points.
