Jeddah: Regional energy connectivity and electricity trade hold strategic importance for Tajikistan, as emphasized by First Deputy Finance Minister Yusuf Majidi during a panel discussion titled 'Regional Energy Connectivity for Sustainable Development.' The discussion took place within the framework of the Annual Meetings of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) Group, APA reports.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Majidi stated that ensuring energy security is a key goal outlined in Tajikistan's National Strategy 2030. He explained that national energy security and regional connectivity in electricity trade are complementary pursuits for Tajikistan. The primary focus is on providing reliable and affordable electricity to the population, industry, and public services.
Majidi also pointed out Tajikistan's significant hydropower potential, which allows the country to export clean energy to regional markets during periods of surplus electricity generation. He cited the CASA-1000 project as a pivotal example of regional cooperation. This major energy transmission project links Central Asia with South Asia, facilitating the transmission of electricity generated in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The Tajik official acknowledged the Islamic Development Bank's role in financing the CASA-1000 project, expressing gratitude for their support. He further noted that energy connectivity extends beyond electricity trade, serving as a platform for broader cooperation between Central Asia and South Asia. Majidi emphasized the potential for electricity connections to foster opportunities in digitalization and other fields.
Finally, Majidi highlighted the integration of various energy sources as a means to strengthen the region's energy balance. He mentioned that Tajikistan's hydropower capabilities could provide balancing capacity for regional systems that are developing based on renewable energy sources.
