Baku: The United States has announced its intention to enhance energy collaboration with Azerbaijan, emphasizing support for regional energy projects, investment, and security measures. This commitment highlights Azerbaijan's significant role as a dependable partner in advancing regional energy security.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, these plans are encapsulated in the Charter on Strategic Partnership between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Government of the United States of America. The charter was signed during the visit of U.S. Vice President JD Vance to Azerbaijan on February 10. The document underscores a joint commitment to expand cooperation in the oil, gas, and electricity sectors, both bilaterally and through alliances with third countries. Key focus areas include interconnector projects and diversifying supply routes.
The partnership aims to boost regional connectivity, particularly through the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor, also known as the Middle Corridor. This involves collaboration on developing land, maritime, and air transportation infrastructure, enhancing energy and data connectivity, facilitating trade and transit, and improving customs control and border crossing processes. The agreement also addresses international multimodal logistics and other related sectors.
The cooperation is driven by Azerbaijan and Central Asian republics' ambition to utilize the Middle Corridor for both cargo and energy exports to Europe. Additionally, the nations are engaged in the 'Green Energy Corridor' project, which plans to export renewable energy from these regions to Europe via an undersea cable across the Caspian Sea.
The Trans-Caspian Pipeline project, which aims to transport Central Asian oil and gas to Europe, is also a significant element of this cooperation. Despite geopolitical challenges delaying its implementation, the emphasis on energy sector collaboration in the Strategic Partnership Charter could accelerate these projects. The U.S. is anticipated to play a crucial role, not only as an investor but also as a guarantor of security for these initiatives.
