WUF13 Event Highlights Inclusive Cities and Independent Living for Persons with Disabilities

Baku: An international training session titled 'Inclusive Cities and Independent Living for Persons with Disabilities' was conducted as a part of WUF13. Organized by the Public Association 'Independent Living Center for Persons with Disabilities,' the session was aligned with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the event aimed to underscore the significance of inclusive cities that facilitate independent living for persons with disabilities, focusing on both policy and practical aspects. Participants engaged in discussions about the influence of urban planning, social policy, and public services on daily life.

The session highlighted that inclusive cities should extend beyond physical accessibility to incorporate integrated services, psychosocial support, and active participation in decision-making processes.

The training featured three main components. During the opening ceremony, significant speeches were delivered by prominent figures, including Sabina Aliyeva, Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of Azerbaijan, and Asya Abdel Yaghi, Chairwoman of the Disability Committee of the Senate of Jordan. Other notable speakers included Elnara Ansari and El Hadji Malick Sylla.

Yemeni representative Aziz Saeed, during the panel session, praised the importance of the event within WUF13, noting Yemen's efforts in maintaining peace and addressing global issues.

Aydin Khalilov, Chair of the 'Independent Living Center for Persons with Disabilities,' emphasized the essence of independent living as the right to choose one's support and services, rather than living without assistance.

The training concluded with the assertion that such initiatives will enhance international cooperation and institutional dialogue in Azerbaijan concerning inclusive urban development and the rights of persons with disabilities.
