BAKU: Religious knowledge needs to be adapted to modern societal realities to ensure unity and prevent social divisions, according to Agil Shiriniov, the rector of the Azerbaijani Institute of Theology. His remarks came during a speech at the republican scientific and practical conference titled “Modern Models of Religious Education in the Context of Traditions and Global Challenges.”
According to Trend News Agency, Shiriniov highlighted the importance of integrating contemporary realities with religious teachings to maintain moral and societal safety. He stressed that religion serves as a crucial system of values for the spiritual development and unity of society. However, he warned that misinterpretations of religious teachings could lead to social fragmentation instead of unity.
The rector emphasized the necessity of basing religious knowledge on reliable sources and considering contemporary societal contexts. “Proper impartation of religious education protects religion from distortions, fosters national
spiritual unity, and shields society from radical religious tendencies,” Shiriniov stated.
During his address, Shiriniov also discussed different global models of religious education. He described confessional education, which is prevalent in countries with an official religion or denomination, and contrasted it with more inclusive models found in secular states, such as the study of religion and teaching about religion. These models do not promote one religious system over another but aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of various religious beliefs and their historical contexts.
In conclusion, Shiriniov noted that both the Azerbaijani Institute of Theology and the Baku Theological College adopt the “teaching religion” and “teaching about religion” models, striving to impart universal spiritual values across diverse religious landscapes.
