A memorial plaque dedicated to Azerbaijani prisoners captured during World War II was unveiled at the Bergen-Belsen Memorial Complex in Lohheide. The plaque, designed by the Azerbaijani Embassy in Germany, is inscribed in both Azerbaijani and German.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the unveiling ceremony was attended by several notable figures including Nasimi Aghayev, the Azerbaijani Ambassador to Germany, Hanna Naber, President of the State Parliament of Lower Saxony, Julia Willie Hamburg, Minister for Education of Lower Saxony, and Elke Gryglewski, Managing Director of the Lower Saxony Memorials Foundation and Director of the Bergen-Belsen Memorial. Members of the Azerbaijani diaspora were also present at the event.
Ambassador Nasimi Aghayev, addressing the gathering, mentioned that this plaque follows two previous memorials dedicated to Azerbaijani compatriots, which were unveiled at the Dachau Memorial Site and Sachsenhausen Me morial Complex in 2024 and 2025. He emphasized Azerbaijan's significant role in the victory over fascism, noting that approximately 700,000 Azerbaijanis fought on the front lines, with over 300,000 losing their lives during the conflict. Azerbaijan also played a crucial role on the home front by supplying 80 percent of the gasoline used by the Soviet Army.
Akim Jah, Head of the Research and Documentation Department, and Rolf Keller, Member of the International Advisory Board of the Bergen-Belsen Memorial Complex, acknowledged the plaque as a tribute to Azerbaijani soldiers who perished or suffered in the camp. Following the speeches, attendees paid their respects by laying wreaths at the plaque.
Historically, the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp imprisoned around 120,000 individuals from various European nations. Of these, 52,000 died in the camp or succumbed to their conditions shortly after liberation.
