Azerbaijani Parliament Condemns Resolutions of Belgian and Dutch Parliaments

Baku: The Chambers of Representatives of Belgium and The Netherlands passed resolutions on 16 April 2026, which, according to the Press and Public Relations Department of the Milli Majlis, are designed to undermine the Azerbaijan-Armenia peace process and hinder efforts to foster an environment of peace and cooperation in the region.

According to Azeri-Press news agency, the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan condemns and categorically rejects these unilateral and biased documents. The documents are criticized for distorting the history and consequences of the Azerbaijan-Armenia conflict and for being based on false claims and unfounded accusations. They are seen as a violation of international law and a provocation to the ongoing peace process.

The timing of these resolutions coincides with a meeting between the Speakers of Parliament of Azerbaijan and Armenia, which the Milli Majlis suggests indicates that the true intent of the documents' authors is to foster enmity rather than promote dialogue. The absence of any reference to the historic Washington Peace Summit in the Belgian document, as well as the omission of its outcomes, further highlights the perceived bias of the documents' authors.

The resolutions, which claim military risks at the Azerbaijani-Armenian border as a basis for continued EU monitoring in Armenia, contradict the public statements of Armenian officials. Azerbaijani authorities emphasize that peace and responsible actions have led to the calmest period in recent years, with no military incidents reported, a fact supported by Armenian sources.

The documents' call for the release of individuals convicted of war crimes, labeling them as "prisoners of war," is criticized as an encroachment on international law and human rights. The legality of their detention and trial has been upheld by international mechanisms, including the International Court of Justice and the UN Human Rights Council's Working Group on Arbitrary Detention.

The Milli Majlis urges the involved states and the European Union to avoid destructive interference in the peace process and to ensure such provocation is not repeated. Azerbaijan demands that the Belgian and Dutch parliaments cease their actions, which are seen as encouraging forces opposed to peace and detrimental to the European Union's security and economic interests in the region.
