Baku: Sheikhulislam Allahshukur Pashazade, Chairman of the Caucasus Muslims Office, engaged in discussions with George Jacob Koovakad, Prefect of the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue of the Holy See, and Father Laurent Basanese, Secretary of the Commission for Religious Relations with Muslims, during a meeting in Baku. This gathering also included members of the Milli Majlis, religious leaders, and ambassadors from Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the Chairman of the Caucasus Muslims Office highlighted the historical progression of Azerbaijan-Vatican relations, initiated by National Leader Heydar Aliyev and continued by President Ilham Aliyev. Sheikhulislam Allahshukur Pashazade reflected on Pope John Paul II's visit to Azerbaijan, noting its significance as he was the first Pope to visit a Muslim-majority country. He also mentioned Pope Francis' visit as a notable event promoting tolerance and multiculturalism at an international level.
The efforts of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, led by First Vice-President Mehriban Aliyeva, in restoring religious monuments, including churches, were underscored by Pashazade. He pointed out that Azerbaijan's approach to multiculturalism is now seen as a global example, with harmonious coexistence of different religions within the country.
In their addresses, Samad Seyidov, Chairman of the Milli Majlis Committee on International Relations and Interparliamentary Affairs, and Musa Gasimli, Deputy Chairman of the Milli Majlis, highlighted the robust religious ties between Azerbaijan and the Holy See and the importance of fostering interfaith dialogue.
George Jacob Koovakad remarked on the mutual respect and friendship underpinning the relationship between Azerbaijan and the Holy See. He noted the significant impact of the Papal visits in enhancing bilateral ties and extended wishes for peace and prosperity to Azerbaijan, expressing optimism for continued successful cooperation.
