Azerbaijan Completes Implementation of Pardon Order

Baku: The implementation of the Pardon Order in Azerbaijan has been successfully completed, granting clemency to more than 200 individuals, APA reports. As part of this initiative, 175 people who were serving prison sentences have been released from the remainder of their sentences, while the sentences of 25 other imprisoned individuals have been reduced by half. Additionally, one individual with a suspended sentence and two others with deferred sentences have been pardoned.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the Pardon Order also affected individuals serving alternative punishments. Ten people sentenced to restriction of liberty were released from their sentences, while the sentences of two others in the same category were halved. Moreover, four individuals sentenced to correctional labor and one person fined have been relieved from their penalties.

The Ministry of Justice confirmed that the Order “On the Pardon of a Number of Convicted Persons” is being executed across penitentiary institutions of various regimes and local Probation Service bodies. This process involves the participation of representatives from the Ombudsman Office, members of the Azerbaijani Parliament (Milli Majlis), the Commission on Pardoning Issues, human rights defenders, the Public Council under the Ministry of Justice, as well as civil society and media representatives.

The execution of this decree, signed by President Ilham Aliyev, is being conducted with the cooperation of the Penitentiary Service and the Probation Service of the Ministry of Justice. The implementation aims to ensure that the terms of the pardon are carried out effectively and transparently, with oversight from various stakeholders involved in the process.
