Azerbaijan Foreign Ministry Criticizes EU Institutions Over Alleged Provocations

BAKU — The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry has called for several institutions within the European Union to cease what it describes as provocations against the country, citing concerns over the portrayal of its judicial processes and political climate.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Head of the Press Service at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, recent criticisms from the EU regarding the treatment of journalists and activists in Azerbaijan are “absolutely wrong and unacceptable.” Hajizadeh emphasized that all criminal cases, including those involving charges of treason and illegal financing, are conducted transparently and adhere to the nation’s criminal-procedural legislation.

The Foreign Ministry expressed frustration over the EU’s calls for the release of individuals before the completion of judicial proceedings, labeling these actions as interference in Azerbaijan’s judicial authority and contrary to the values the EU promotes. Furthermore, the Ministry highlighted what it perceives as hypocrisy within the EU, pointing to overlooked violations of rights and instances of political persecution within its own member states, including incidents related to the “yellow vests” movement in France and tensions in New Caledonia.

The Azerbaijani statement underscores a significant strain in relations between Azerbaijan and the European Union, focusing on differing perceptions of legal norms and human rights practices.
