Azerbaijan Hosts World Environment Day, Highlights Environmental Initiatives

Baku: Azerbaijan celebrated World Environment Day 2026 by hosting global celebrations in the region for the first time, marking an important occasion for the country. It underscores Azerbaijan's active role in promoting environmental awareness on an international scale and its contributions to global efforts aimed at protecting the planet.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, environmental protection has become a shared responsibility of the international community in the 21st century. The increasing consequences of climate change, natural resource depletion, biodiversity loss, land degradation, pollution, and extreme heat are interrelated challenges that require urgent attention. These environmental challenges impact ecosystems, sustainable development, public health, and the prosperity of nations, affecting the well-being of future generations.

In response to these challenges, Azerbaijan is implementing significant initiatives for environmental protection. The country is experiencing more frequent floods and droughts, with water scarcity posing a serious concern not only for Azerbaijan but for the entire region. The Caspian Sea's declining water levels are approaching historic lows, highlighting the severity of the issue.

Azerbaijan has identified a clean environment and 'green growth' as one of its five national priorities for socio-economic development through 2030. Efforts are being made to increase green spaces, improve water and energy resource efficiency, and develop modern waste management infrastructure. Biodiversity preservation is also a focus, with the expansion of protected nature areas, including the Hyrcanian forests, which are now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The country is addressing the ecological damage caused by nearly three decades of occupation, which resulted in ecocide and urbicide. Reconstruction in liberated territories in the Garabagh and East Zangezur regions involves implementing 'smart city' and 'smart village' concepts, green energy projects, and modern technologies to restore ecosystems.

Garabagh and East Zangezur have been declared green energy zones with significant renewable energy potential, including solar, wind, and hydropower resources. Developing green energy remains a policy priority for Azerbaijan.

The World Environment Day theme, 'Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For our Future,' emphasizes the need for stronger links between climate action and nature. Azerbaijan's COP29 Chairmanship played a significant role in fostering climate diplomacy and global solidarity, leading to the 'Baku breakthrough' with historic decisions.

Azerbaijan's climate leadership continued with the recent hosting of the World Urban Forum, which resulted in the Baku Call to Action. This emphasized the need for international cooperation and action to promote sustainable, climate-resilient housing.

Azerbaijan remains committed to advancing the global environmental agenda by fostering multilateral cooperation, aiming to leave a green and sustainable legacy for future generations.
