Azerbaijan Launches Baku Initiative on Human Development for Climate Resilience.

Copenhagen: Azerbaijan, serving as the chair for COP29, has announced the launch of the ‘Baku Initiative on Human Development for Climate Resilience’. This initiative is designed to enhance cross-sectoral collaboration and ensure complementarity among education, health, and employment sectors, as stated by the head of the Azerbaijani delegation, Health Minister Teymur Musayev.

According to Trend News Agency, the announcement was made during the opening of the 74th session of the European Regional Committee of the World Health Organization in Copenhagen. Minister Musayev highlighted that 2024 has been declared the ‘Year of Solidarity for a Green World’ in Azerbaijan. The decree by the head of state emphasizes Azerbaijan’s commitment as a responsible member of the international community in combating the effects of climate change.

Minister Musayev reiterated Azerbaijan’s dedication to the green agenda, noting that the country will host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Conv
ention on Climate Change (COP29) in November. This decision was confirmed during the plenary meeting of COP28 held in Dubai on December 11 of the previous year.

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, established at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, aims to prevent hazardous human interference with the climate system. The Conference of Parties (COP) serves as the highest legislative body overseeing the Convention’s implementation. With 198 countries as parties to the agreement, the COP is convened annually unless otherwise decided. The inaugural COP event took place in March 1995 in Berlin, and the secretariat is based in Bonn.
