BAKU: Azerbaijan has officially registered over 28,000 attendees for the upcoming Conference of the Parties (COP29), which is set to take place in Baku, according to Narmin Jarchalova, Chairperson of the Board and Chief Operating Officer of the COP29 Azerbaijan Operational Company. Jarchalova revealed these figures during a media tour at the Baku Olympic Stadium.
According to Trend News Agency, Jarchalova stated that among the registered attendees, approximately 2,700 are media representatives. The remaining participants comprise official delegations from various non-governmental organizations, international bodies, and countries. Jarchalova highlighted that the number of registrations already surpasses those from previous COP events in Glasgow and Sharm El Sheikh. She also pointed out that the registration process is still ongoing, with daily increases in participation rates expected as the event date approaches. Most delegations, she noted, tend to register closer to the event, indicating potential further
increases in attendee numbers.
The decision to host COP29 in Azerbaijan was made during the COP28 plenary session in Dubai on December 11 of the previous year. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, established at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, aims to prevent harmful human interference with the climate system. The Conference of the Parties (COP) serves as the supreme decision-making body of the convention, which includes 198 member countries. Traditionally held annually unless decided otherwise by the parties, the first COP took place in March 1995 in Berlin, Germany, with the secretariat based in Bonn.
