Azerbaijan to Develop Comprehensive Climate Strategy by 2030

BAKU—Azerbaijan is embarking on the formulation of a new comprehensive climate strategy aimed at enhancing the country’s sustainability and increasing the share of renewable energy in electricity production to 30% by 2030, announced Mukhtar Babayev, the Azerbaijani Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources and COP29 President.

According to Trend News Agency, the announcement was made during the Law and Climate International Conference in Baku. Babayev highlighted the significant steps Azerbaijan is taking towards sustainable development, which includes the construction of solar and wind power plants in the Absheron region and beyond. The strategy focuses on expanding the use of electric vehicles, fostering environmentally friendly industrial development, engaging in reforestation, and combating soil degradation.

The initiative also addresses the creation of green energy routes and zones throughout the nation. Babayev stressed the importance of aligning the new climate strategy with global commitments while considering national priorities. The strategy will encompass all economic sectors with the aim of fostering a low-carbon economy. He acknowledged the existence of significant challenges, such as increasing the country’s capacity for climate change adaptation, limited access to clean technologies, and the need for enhanced international climate financing to support local projects.

Legal reforms are also on the agenda to strengthen Azerbaijan’s climate action framework. Babayev pointed out the necessity for clearer legislative mechanisms to meet global climate commitments and prevent violations. Furthermore, he emphasized the role of Azerbaijan in spearheading discussions on climate financing at COP29. The country has proposed 14 key initiatives, focusing on innovative approaches to climate change mitigation and adaptation at both national and global levels.
