BAKU: The ecology of the South Caucasus, particularly Azerbaijan, is being significantly harmed by 26 mining facilities operating in Armenia, according to Sabit Baghirov, Head of the Azerbaijani Entrepreneurship and Market Economy Development Foundation. During a briefing in Baku, Baghirov highlighted the detrimental impacts of Armenia’s mining industry on the region.
According to Trend News Agency, Baghirov criticized Armenia for not joining the UN Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes, a critical international agreement that aims to protect and ensure the sustainable use of waters shared by multiple countries. He noted that 153 countries globally engage in the utilization of transboundary water resources, underscoring the universal relevance of this issue.
“The joint use of transboundary water resources is a relevant issue for all of humanity. Azerbaijan is a participant in the UN Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and In
ternational Lakes. Armenia’s accession to this convention could play a very important role in reducing the risks of pollution in transboundary rivers,” Baghirov stated. He emphasized the need for cooperative management and protection of shared water resources to prevent ecological degradation in the region.
