Geneva: Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Elnur Mammadov attended the 61st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva from February 23-25, 2026. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed his participation in several high-level meetings during the visit.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the Deputy Minister discussed the Azerbaijan-Armenia normalization process and issues from the Washington agreement, highlighting the role of the Zangezur corridor in regional development. He also detailed the "Great Return" program, focusing on resolving issues related to missing persons, demining efforts, and the return of internally displaced persons to their homes.
Mammadov stressed the importance of addressing large-scale mine contamination to uphold human rights and called for enhanced international cooperation. He assured that trials of individuals accused of war crimes were conducted following international and national laws, restoring justice in Azerbaijan.
The UN Human Rights Council Working Group on Arbitrary Detention had previously confirmed that Azerbaijan's legal processes met international standards, as seen in the case of Ruben Vardanyan. Additionally, Azerbaijan's growing role as a platform for international dialogue was highlighted, with events like COP29 and upcoming UN sessions set to take place in the country.
