Azerbaijan's Milli Majlis has issued a strong condemnation of recent resolutions adopted by the Parliaments of Belgium and the Netherlands.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, on April 16, 2026, the Chambers of Representatives of Belgium and the Netherlands passed resolutions that Azerbaijan claims undermine the ongoing peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia. The Azerbaijani parliament described these documents as unilateral and biased, asserting that they misrepresent Azerbaijan's sovereign territory and are rooted in false claims and unfounded accusations.
The statement from Azerbaijan's Milli Majlis argues that these resolutions distort historical facts and the outcomes of the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia. It accuses the initiators of these documents of being influenced by traditionally anti-Azerbaijani and Islamophobic views, which violate international law and aim to disrupt the peace process at a sensitive time.</ P>
The timing of the adoption of these resolutions coincided with meetings between the Speakers of Parliament from Azerbaijan and Armenia. This, the statement suggests, reveals the true intentions of the document's authors: to incite hostility rather than promote peace and dialogue.
Azerbaijan's Milli Majlis also criticized the Belgian resolution for omitting any reference to the Washington Peace Summit, which included significant outcomes such as the initialing of an agreement on establishing peace and interstate relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia. The Azerbaijani parliament claims this omission reflects the resolution's authors' bias and lack of understanding.
The statement further notes that portraying individuals convicted of war crimes as 'prisoners of war' and demanding their release contradicts international law. It highlights that international bodies, including the International Court of Justice and the UN Working Group, have validated the lawfulne ss of these trials and dismissed claims against Azerbaijan.
Azerbaijan calls on the relevant states and the European Union to avoid interfering disruptively in the peace process. The Milli Majlis urges these entities to ensure that such provocative actions are not repeated, emphasizing the detrimental impact on regional security and economic interests.
Finally, the Milli Majlis demands that the Parliaments of Belgium and the Netherlands cease their perceived campaign of hatred against Azerbaijan. The Azerbaijani parliament warns that such actions could embolden forces opposing peace and adversely affect the European Union's interests in the region.
