Baku Initiative Group to Host Sikh Human Rights Conference in Geneva

Geneva: The Baku Initiative Group (BIG) is set to organize an international conference in Geneva, Switzerland, focusing on "Combating Transnational Repression by the Government of India: Sikh Resistance and the UN." The event will take place on the sidelines of the 61st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, as reported by the Baku Initiative Group to APA.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the conference will assemble key representatives from the Sikh diaspora in countries including Canada, the UK, Australia, and the U.S., alongside individuals who have directly experienced India's repressive policies. Discussions will center on the threats and actions by the Indian government that have led ethnic communities to emigrate, and the increasing attacks and terror threats faced by Sikh activists, diaspora leaders, and their families abroad. These discussions aim to highlight concerns about cross-border repression and fundamental human rights violations.

Topics at the event will include the need to draw international organizations' attention to these issues, the potential for bringing India's repressive actions against ethnic minorities to the agenda of the UN and its relevant bodies, and the more effective application of existing Human Rights Council procedures. Additionally, the event will address the importance of systematic documentation by UN rapporteurs on cross-border issues and ethnic minority rights, the strengthening of accountability and monitoring mechanisms globally to prevent such cases, and the Indian government's international responsibility.

The conference will conclude with a joint report presentation by the Baku Initiative Group and the Sikh Federation, followed by a session for media representatives to ask questions.
