Baku: A memorandum to be signed between the International Sikh Federation and the Baku Initiative Group will regulate relations established in the academic sphere, Executive Director of the Baku Initiative Group Abbas Abbasov told journalists, APA reports.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Abbasov commented on the Amritsar events, stating that these events marked a turning point in the history of repression and discrimination against ethnic minorities in India. He noted that these occurrences underscored the real attitude and approach toward ethnic minorities in India. Following these events, nearly 5 million members of the Sikh community were compelled to leave the country and form significant diaspora organizations in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada, where they began their legitimate struggle. This policy of repression and discrimination was extended by the Indian government beyond its borders as well. Instead of engaging in negotiations, the government began applying repressive policies against the Sikh community, which were later extended to other ethnic minorities and individuals belonging to lower castes.
Abbasov also mentioned that the Baku Initiative Group began cooperating with representatives of the Sikh community in 2025. In 2026, initial contacts were established, and discussions were held with Dalits. In the coming months, joint projects with Dalits are expected to be presented to the public. Dalits, another ethnic minority group, have been subjected to repression and discrimination for years. Despite a population of approximately 320 million, the Indian government continues to pursue discriminatory and repressive policies against them.
