FIFA Imposes Sanctions Following World Cup Final Scuffle

Metlife stadium: FIFA announced sanctions on Friday, August 21, after a scuffle broke out following the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina. The match, held at MetLife Stadium, ended in chaos as players and coaching staff clashed on the field.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Leandro Paredes and Nahuel Molina from Argentina received the harshest penalties. Paredes faces a suspension of 10 international matches along with a $90,000 fine, while Molina is suspended for 7 international matches and must also pay a $90,000 fine.

The altercation began moments after the final whistle. Molina collided with Rodri, who had entered the field to celebrate. This led to a confrontation involving Borja Iglesias and Eric Garc­a. The situation escalated when Paredes joined in, shoving Gavi and targeting Thiago Almada. The Boca Juniors midfielder further intensified the situation by grabbing Gavi by the neck and throwing him to the ground. Eric Garc­a was also caught in the fray.

Efforts to contain the chaos were made by Argentina's coaching team, including Lionel Scaloni and Walter Samuel. However, tensions flared again when Roberto Ayala, another assistant coach, assaulted Olmo. Ayala was penalized with a 3-match suspension and a $30,000 fine.
