Baku Port Director Eyes Green Hydrogen as Future Marine Fuel in the Caspian Sea

BAKU - Green hydrogen could play a key role as a marine fuel in the Caspian Sea in the near future, according to Taleh Ziyadov, Director-General of the Baku International Sea Trade Port (BISTP).

According to Trend News Agency, Ziyadov made the remarks during the Baku Climate Action Week, highlighting that Kazakhstan is already exploring the potential of hydrogen as a "green" fuel. "In 5-10 years, hydrogen will become more accessible for general use. This issue is also being discussed in Azerbaijan," Ziyadov stated. He urged participants in the Middle Corridor initiative to expedite their transition to green energy, especially given the European Union's planned carbon emissions tax set for 2026, which will impose green standards on containers and cargo, requiring certifications for compliance.

Ziyadov's comments reflect broader regional ambitions to align with global sustainability targets and reduce carbon footprints in maritime transport, a sector central to Caspian trade.
