Black January’s Role in the Fall of the Soviet Union Highlighted by US Saratoga Foundation

Washington: 'Black January is important in the United States because it set off the death of the Soviet Union,' Glen Howard, the President and Chairman of the US Saratoga Foundation, told AZERTAC.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Howard emphasized that Black January marked a pivotal moment for Azerbaijan as the country carved out its own identity and reclaimed its national sovereignty. He noted that this event was not only significant for Azerbaijan but also resonated with other peoples within the Soviet Union, who were eager to protect their national identities.

Howard further elaborated on the symbolic nature of Black January, stating that it highlighted the broader regional desire for independence and autonomy from Soviet rule. This event, he asserted, is a crucial chapter in Azerbaijan's national history and identity, reflecting a collective yearning for sovereignty that ultimately contributed to the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
