Manchester: Britain is considering a bid to host the 2042 FIFA World Cup, as Prime Minister Andy Burnham has suggested the possibility of bringing the global football event to the United Kingdom. This proposal was revealed during a meeting with city mayors at the prime minister's new office in Manchester.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, discussions are underway between the British government, the Football Association, and the English Premier League regarding the submission of a formal bid for the World Cup. Burnham also reportedly has plans to pursue hosting the 2040 Olympic and Paralympic Games, focusing on northern British cities to drive regional economic growth. The Times highlighted Burnham's consistent advocacy for hosting major international sporting events in the north of England, a stance he maintained during his tenure as mayor of Greater Manchester.
England's history with the World Cup includes hosting the event once before, in 1966, which coincides with the only instance of the English national team winning the tournament.
