BAKU: Global climate change is prompting significant shifts in Azerbaijan’s economic strategies, with a strong push towards green financing to ensure sustainable development, according to the Central Bank of Azerbaijan. Speaking at the “Green finance and sustainable development” forum in Baku, the chairperson, Taleh Kazimov, emphasized the critical need for transitioning to environmentally sustainable investments.
According to Trend News Agency, Kazimov highlighted the adverse impacts of global climate change on Azerbaijan’s economy, underscoring the importance of green finance not only for environmental benefits but also for economic sustainability. He outlined the Central Bank’s strategic agenda, which includes enhancing regulatory frameworks and promoting green investments. “Our main goal is to make sure financial institutions can adjust their portfolios to meet sustainability goals, providing them with necessary tools and guidance,” Kazimov stated.
The forum also touched on the progress made by the Cent
ral Bank in developing a green finance taxonomy, which is a classification system to identify which investments can be considered green. This initiative has involved consultations with government bodies, industry groups, financial entities, investors, and international organizations. The next steps include finalizing this taxonomy and seeking government approval.
This move towards green finance reflects a broader understanding of the economic risks associated with climate change and the role financial policies play in mitigating these risks. The Central Bank of Azerbaijan is taking proactive steps to integrate sustainability into the nation’s financial landscape, ensuring that economic growth aligns with environmental conservation efforts.
