Tajikistan Prepares for COP29 with National Conference

DUSHANBE: In an effort to address climate change issues and prepare for the upcoming 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) in Azerbaijan, Tajikistan hosted a significant pre-conference event focusing on strategic planning and collaborative efforts toward environmental sustainability, Trend News Agency reported.

According to Trend News Agency, the event titled “Pre-COP29 National Conference: Tajikistan’s Roadmap for the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change” brought together experts, development partners, and young activists to discuss the nation’s climate strategies and initiatives. The conference highlighted several critical areas of Tajikistan’s environmental plans, including the Glacier Pavilion-2025, which is set to be a major feature at COP29.

The discussions also emphasized the progress of Tajikistan’s biennial transparency report, a tool crucial for tracking the country’s environmental efforts and their outcomes. Furthermore, the successes in implementing t
he Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) were shared, underscoring the country’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and enhancing sustainability measures.

A key aspect of the conference was the involvement of youth and their action plans, particularly concerning water and climate challenges, reflecting the growing recognition of young people’s roles in climate advocacy and action. Additionally, the conference reviewed the achievements of the Aga Khan Development Agency in its climate change mitigation projects, demonstrating successful partnerships between the government and private entities.

The conference also provided an opportunity to discuss the National Adaptation Plan (NAP), focusing on how Tajikistan can better adapt to the adverse effects of climate change, ensuring the resilience of its ecosystems and communities.

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, established at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, serves as the basis for such conferences, aiming to prevent hazardous
human impacts on the climate. With 198 countries participating, the annual COP summits are pivotal in fostering international collaboration and effective policy-making to combat global warming and environmental degradation.
