ICESCO Emphasizes Youth Involvement in Sustainable Urban Development on World Cities Day.

Rabat: On World Cities Day, the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) has underscored the significance of youth involvement in constructing sustainable urban societies. Celebrated annually on October 31st, this year’s theme, ‘Youth Climate Changemakers: Catalyzing Local Action for Urban Sustainability,’ serves as a platform to spotlight the critical role young people play in developing smart and green cities, while also ensuring sustainable living conditions through innovative approaches to environmental and urbanization challenges.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, ICESCO has called upon the international community, including nations, organizations, and the private sector, to foster youth participation in environmental protection, a key component of sustainable development. This involves investing in youth capacity-building to adapt to climate change, promoting initiatives led by youth and women, and supporting projects that encourage the transition towards smart,
resilient, and sustainable urban environments.

In alignment with global efforts and its member states, ICESCO has launched several initiatives and programs through its Science and Environment Sector. These are designed to equip youth with modern technological skills to innovate climate change solutions, such as the Youth Climate Leadership Training Camp. This initiative aims to enhance youth capabilities in creating and executing innovative climate action projects. Additionally, the Smart, Sustainable and Resilient Cities in the Islamic World Program seeks to instill these concepts across member states, promoting the rational use of natural resources. Another key program includes training youth in developing small technology and innovation businesses.

Recognizing the invaluable contributions of young people, ICESCO highlights the importance of nurturing their creativity, passion, and leadership skills. The organization emphasizes the need to prepare new generations to tackle future climate change challenges
effectively.
