Tehran: Iran’s Supreme Court has confirmed the death sentence for the individual responsible for the attack on Azerbaijan’s embassy in Tehran, as announced by Asghar Jahangir, spokesman for the Iranian Court and Justice System.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the Supreme Court’s decision finalizes the legal process for the individual who carried out the assault on January 27, 2023. During this attack, the assailant, Yasin Huseynzada, fatally shot the head of the embassy’s security service, Orkhan Asgarov, and seriously injured two other employees, Vasif Taghiyev and Mahir Imanov, using a ‘Kalashnikov’ assault rifle.
The attack led to significant diplomatic repercussions, including halting the operations of the Azerbaijani embassy in Iran. On January 29, 2023, all embassy staff and their families, totaling 53 people, were evacuated from Tehran to Baku.
In recognition of their bravery, Vasif Taghiyev was awarded a 1st-degree “Rashadat” order, while Mahir Imanov received the ‘For Service to Motherland’ medal. The incident and its subsequent legal proceedings have been closely monitored by the Prosecutor General’s Office of Azerbaijan, maintaining regular communication with Iranian authorities. After a year-long trial, the Iranian Ministry of Justice confirmed the death sentence for Huseynzada.
