MOSCOW — Dmitry Peskov, spokesperson for the Russian presidency, announced that Russia has developed alternative routes for gas supplies to Europe following Ukraine’s decision not to extend the gas transit agreement with Gazprom. This development arises as the current contract is set to expire at the end of this year, sparking concerns over energy supply stability in Europe.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Russia is planning to establish a gas hub in Türkiye to compensate for the transit volumes lost through the Nord Stream pipeline. This strategy was first proposed by Russian President Vladimir Putin in October 2022 and further elaborated by Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak in December 2023, with implementation expected to commence in 2024. This move is part of Russia’s broader efforts to adapt to changing geopolitical dynamics and ensure continuous gas delivery to European markets.
