Ombudsman Aliyeva Seeks Intervention for Detained Azerbaijanis in Montenegro

Baku: Azerbaijan’s Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) Sabina Aliyeva has reached out to her Montenegrin counterpart, Sini€š¬…¡¬‚¬¦¡¬‚¬Å¡¬¦¡¬‚¬Å¡¬€¦¡¬¦¡¬‚¬Å¡¬€¦¡¬€š¬¦¡¬¦¡¬‚¬Å¡¬€¦¡¬€š¬¦¡¬€š¬…¡¬¦¡¬¦¡¬¦¡a Bjekovic, regarding the recent detention of several Azerbaijani citizens in Podgorica, Montenegro. The Ombudsman’s Press Service informed APA about the letter, which calls for the protection of the rights of these individuals.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Commissioner Aliyeva urged Bjekovic to oversee the situation and ensure that the detained Azerbaijanis are treated in compliance with Montenegro’s national laws and international human rights standards. She stressed the importance of respecting the detainees’ rights, which include the presumption of innocence and access to legal representation. Additionally, she requested the provision of interpreter services to assist the detainees.

The communication also addressed the necessity of preventing discrimination, hate speech, or hostility based on ethnic, national, or religious grounds. Aliyeva emphasized that these protections align with the principles of equality and non-discrimination outlined in international agreements.
