Baku: President Ilham Aliyev has signed the Law on the approval of the United Nations Convention 'Against Cybercrime' with the relevant declarations and reservations of the Republic of Azerbaijan, APA reports. Under this law, the State Security Service is designated to handle requests for mutual legal assistance concerning cybercrimes, as well as assist other participating states in preventing such crimes. This includes serving as a 24/7 contact point to ensure assistance.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the Ministry of Justice will manage requests related to extradition or provisional arrest. Azerbaijan played an active role in drafting the final version of the UN Convention against Cybercrime, contributing significantly through a delegation that included representatives from various government bodies. This delegation took part in multilateral negotiations, providing a constructive and principled stance that helped shape the document.
The Convention against Cybercrime was adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 24, 2024. It is the first international legal framework designed to combat cybercrime globally. Ratification of the Convention is expected to enhance the activities of security and law enforcement agencies in Azerbaijan. The document outlines international legal procedures for handling electronic evidence and aims to improve the efficiency of transnational investigations, with mechanisms for urgent international cooperation enabling swift responses to cybercrimes.
