Baku: Russia announced that its air defenses successfully intercepted 419 Ukrainian drones early Tuesday, including 56 that were approaching Moscow, marking one of the latest extensive cross-border drone attacks, Kyiv Post reports. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin shared on Telegram that Russian air defense units started intercepting drones headed towards the capital at approximately 4 a.m. local time, and by morning, 56 drones had been destroyed before reaching the city limits. No casualties or damage in Moscow were reported by Sobyanin.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the drone attacks led to the temporary suspension of operations at Moscow's Domodedovo and Zhukovsky airports. The Russian Defense Ministry stated that a total of 419 Ukrainian drones were intercepted and destroyed overnight across 18 Russian oblasts and Russian-occupied Crimea. Residents in the cities of Tula, Novorossiysk, and Ryazan reported hearing explosions during the incidents.
This recent wave of drone interceptions follows closely on the heels of Russia's previous claim of downing 660 Ukrainian drones between June 25 and June 26, which was noted as one of the highest daily totals since the conflict began. Additionally, a Ukrainian drone strike had ignited a fire at an oil refinery in Moscow's southeastern Kapotnya district on June 18. However, Russian claims regarding the number of intercepted drones and the extent of the damage remain unverifiable independently.
