DUSHANBE: Tajikistan and Uzbekistan have discussed the potential for implementing new joint transboundary projects in the water management sector, Trend reports.
According to the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources of Tajikistan, the issue was discussed during the seventh meeting of the joint working group on the comprehensive use of water resources from the transboundary rivers of Central Asia between Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, which took place in Dushanbe.
During the meeting, the parties discussed the use of water resources from Lake Sarez to provide the region’s countries with clean drinking water. Both sides expressed confidence that cooperation in the water resources sector will expand and strengthen.
Daler Juma, Minister of Energy and Water Resources of Tajikistan, and Shavkat Khamraev, Minister of Water Management of Uzbekistan, as well as delegations from both sides, participated in the meeting.
According to the Ministry of Energy, Tajikistan possesses enormous reserves of hydroelectric resourc
es, estimated at 527 billion kWh per year. In the global ranking of hydroelectric potential, Tajikistan ranks eighth after China, Russia, the USA, Brazil, Zaire, India, and Canada, and first in Central Asia. Hydropower accounts for more than 95 percent of Tajikistan’s energy sector.
