Baku: Member states are being supported to improve the efficiency of health systems, according to Hanan Balkhy, Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean Region of the World Health Organization (WHO). Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the Islamic Development Bank Annual Meetings held in Baku, Balkhy emphasized the WHO's commitment to reducing health risks, strengthening primary healthcare services, and ensuring effective operation of health systems at all levels.
According to Azeri-Press News agency, Balkhy highlighted the interconnected nature of the modern world, where expanded travel and integration among communities pose certain health risks. She underscored the importance of environmental monitoring, particularly wastewater surveillance, as a cost-effective method to detect pathogen spread within communities. Balkhy noted significant achievements in preventing infections through cooperation with organizations such as WHO, UNICEF, GAVI, the Islamic Development Bank, and other partners.
Balkhy cited the emergence of poliomyelitis in Gaza during 2024-2025 as a concrete example of WHO's effective monitoring and response. The destruction of infrastructure, damage to sewage and water systems, population displacement, and suspension of immunization had created conditions for pathogen spread. However, the established wastewater monitoring system enabled timely detection of the poliovirus, allowing for rapid response measures. Consequently, approximately 600,000 children were vaccinated in three phases, preventing a wider resurgence of the disease.
The Regional Director also elaborated on the strategic partnership with the Islamic Development Bank, emphasizing its role beyond mere financing. The Bank is a key partner in eradicating poliomyelitis and preventing vaccine-related polio cases, as well as in strengthening primary healthcare services through various health initiatives.
Balkhy further discussed WHO's cooperation with Azerbaijan, a member of the European Region. WHO, with offices in over 150 countries, implements numerous cooperation projects coordinated by the Regional Director. Balkhy reiterated WHO's support for member states in reducing health risks and strengthening healthcare systems, highlighting Azerbaijan's importance in these efforts.
