Azerbaijan and Kenya Strengthen Bilateral Relations with New Initiatives

Nairobi: Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Kenya Sultan Hajiyev met with Musalia Mudavadi, Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs. The meeting underscored the positive dynamics in the development of bilateral relations anticipated in 2025, highlighting the significant contributions made by high-level visits throughout the year in enhancing cooperation across multiple sectors.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi emphasized the significance of the meeting between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Kenyan President William Samoei Ruto at the UN headquarters in New York on September 23. He noted that the cordial relations between the leaders are beneficial for both nations. Mudavadi also highlighted the importance of the first political consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and the official visit of Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov to Kenya as pivotal moments in the development of bilateral ties.

Ambassador Sultan Hajiyev remarked on the importance of fully utilizing existing opportunities to expand cooperation. He highlighted progress achieved this year in fields such as energy, technology, judicial and legal affairs, interparliamentary relations, penitentiary services, and education. Hajiyev also mentioned the new opportunities for expanding partnerships between diplomatic institutions, made possible by the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Azerbaijan’s ADA University and Kenya’s Foreign Service Academy.

The ambassador provided insights into the preparations, initiatives, and upcoming events related to the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13), scheduled for May 17-22, 2026, in Baku. Sultan Hajiyev noted that, for the first time in the Forum’s history, heads of state and government will participate in the Summit, marking a significant step in Azerbaijan’s global leadership in urban planning. He emphasized the enhanced cooperation between Azerbaijan and Kenya on sustainable urban development and climate-related issues, as well as the opportunity to expand ties between the COP and WUF platforms.

Both parties acknowledged the impact of scholarships provided to Kenyan youth through the Heydar Aliyev International Education Grant Program and the humanitarian assistance from the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and the Azerbaijan International Development Agency to schools and hospitals in Kenya. These initiatives have significantly contributed to strengthening the friendly relations between the peoples of Azerbaijan and Kenya.
