Azerbaijan Enacts Strict Penalties for Ecological Damage.

Baku: Those who deliberately and seriously damage the ecosystem in Azerbaijan will face up to 15 years in prison. Deliberate actions that cause large-scale, long-term, and serious damage to the ecological system may be punished by imprisonment for 10 to 15 years, APA reports.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, this was reflected in the amendment to the Criminal Code approved by President Ilham Aliyev. Under the new Article 104-1 (Ecocide) added to the Criminal Code, the deliberate mass destruction of plant or animal species, poisoning of the atmosphere, soil, or water resources, or any other actions that harm the ecosystem will be punishable by imprisonment for a period of 10 to 15 years if these actions cause an ecological disaster or create a real threat of an ecological disaster.

The legislative change marks a significant step in Azerbaijan’s commitment to environmental protection. By introducing severe penalties for ecocide, the government aims to deter individuals and organizations from engaging i
n activities that could lead to ecological disasters. This move aligns with global efforts to address environmental challenges and underscores the importance of safeguarding natural resources for future generations.

The amendment is part of a broader initiative to strengthen environmental laws in Azerbaijan. Authorities are expected to increase monitoring and enforcement to ensure compliance with the new regulations. Environmental advocates have welcomed the change, noting that it provides a legal framework to prosecute those who engage in harmful ecological practices.

The introduction of this legislation highlights the growing recognition of environmental issues and the need for robust legal mechanisms to address them. As Azerbaijan continues to develop economically, balancing growth with environmental sustainability remains a critical priority for the nation’s leadership.
