Azerbaijan to Integrate State Language Norms in Naming Streets and Squares

Baku: Azerbaijan is considering a legislative amendment that will integrate state language norms into the naming of avenues, streets, squares, and other territorial components. This was discussed in a meeting of the Parliament’s Committee for Regional Affairs.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the proposed amendment to the Law on territorial device and administrative-territorial division will require that the naming or renaming of these areas be conducted by relevant executive authorities. These authorities must take into account both the local population’s opinion and the norms of the state language.

Currently, the law mandates that names be decided by the relevant executive authorities with consideration of local residents’ opinions. The amendment seeks to add an additional layer of consideration by including the state language norms in the decision-making process, thus altering the existing legal framework for naming public spaces.
