Azerbaijani President Announces Liberation of Key Territories Amid Ongoing Karabakh Conflict

BAKU: The 44-day conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the Nagorno-Karabakh region saw significant developments as Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev announced the liberation of several key territories. The announcement, part of a broader address to the nation, marked a pivotal moment in the conflict, which has been characterized by fierce military engagements and ongoing violations of ceasefire agreements. According to Trend News Agency, President Aliyev's address detailed the liberation of multiple villages in the Zangilan, Gubadli, and Jabrayil districts, as well as the city of Gubadli. This announcement was part of Azerbaijan's counter-offensive operation, known as the "Iron Fist," launched on September 27, 2020, following what Azerbaijan described as large-scale provocations by Armenian armed forces. The operation aimed to reclaim territories that had been under Armenian control for nearly three decades. First Vice President of Azerbaijan, Mehriban Aliyeva, echoed the president's announcement, s haring news of the liberated areas on her Instagram account. The day also saw President Aliyev participating in an interview with Italy's Rai-1 TV channel, further highlighting Azerbaijan's military advances. Amid these developments, the conflict continued on the ground with Armenian forces reportedly shelling Azerbaijani units using artillery. The shelling from Armenia targeted Azerbaijan's Tovuz, Gadabay, and Dashkasan districts, as well as Aghjabadi district and Tartar city, where Armenian forces used 'Smerch' missiles. Additionally, an Armenian drone was destroyed by Azerbaijani forces during the ongoing hostilities. In the wake of the military advancements, Azerbaijan released videos showcasing the liberated villages of Padar and Khanlig in the Gubadli district, along with imagery of the city of Gubadli, underscoring the strategic gains made during the conflict. Despite Azerbaijan's advancements, Armenia continued to violate the ceasefire, further complicating efforts toward a peaceful resolution.
