Baku: Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev announced that more than 50,000 people have been resettled in territories liberated from Armenian occupation, with the process ongoing. The President made these remarks during an interview with Saudi Arabia's Al Arabiya TV channel, as reported by APA.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, President Aliyev addressed the historical context of the displacement, noting that there were no Armenian internally displaced persons (IDPs) because Azerbaijan never occupied Armenian territory. Instead, he emphasized that it was Azerbaijani lands that were occupied, resulting in numerous Azerbaijani refugees and IDPs who endured challenging living conditions for many years.
President Aliyev highlighted that the resettlement program began even during the occupation. Many IDPs had lived in tent camps for over a decade. Upon assuming the presidency, Aliyev initiated the abolishment of these camps, completing this process by 2007. Despite these efforts, a significant number still lived in poor conditions. The current resettlement initiative, known as the 'Great Return' program, aims to address these issues by facilitating the return of displaced individuals to their original homes in the liberated regions.
